Mirko Borsche is blown away by a mobile phone that can do almost nothing

It occurred to me recently that even on the toilet I need to take a quick look at the ZEIT ONLINE news site. Things can’t go on like this, I thought to myself. And so I got a phone that lets you do precisely two things: make calls and send texts.

It seems that I’m not the only one thinking this way. Otherwise Nokia wouldn’t have re-released the classic 3310. But I’ve bought a different phone, one with a similarly limited number of functions but which is (to my eyes) rather more stylish – and that’s important to me. The MP 01 from Punkt. reminds me a little of the classic Braun calculator that I recently wrote about here, which is why I like it so much. For one week I swapped my smartphone for an MP 01. The first three days of withdrawal weren’t easy, but after that I didn’t miss anything about it at all, nothing whatsoever. I spent a lot less time making phone calls, because I wasn’t constantly mucking about on the device and as a result didn’t end up ringing people all the time. Instead, I suddenly reverted to being much more aware of what was going on around me. On one occasion I was on a train heading out of Munich and simply looked out of the window. As a result I noticed how many new buildings had been built along the railway tracks … for years, I simply hadn’t looked. And another advantage: I had needed to charge the phone precisely once, on Day One.
Gut, wenn ich beruflich auf Reisen bin, ist es mir zu kompliziert, mit meinem Laptop ein Café mit WLAN zu suchen, um meine Mails abzurufen. Aber privat will ich jetzt so oft wie möglich das Smartphone zu Hause lassen. Und die ZEIT gibt es ja auch auf Papier.

Sure, when I’m travelling professionally it’s too complicated to go looking for a café with an internet connection where I can download emails onto my laptop. But outside of work hours, I’m going to be leaving my smartphone at home as often as possible. And Die Zeit is still available in print format.

Mirko Borsche ist hin und weg von einem Handy, das fast gar nichts kann

Neulich fiel mir auf, dass ich selbst auf dem Klo noch das Bedürfnis hatte, schnell mal ZEIT ONLINE zu checken. So geht es nicht weiter, dachte ich. Und besorgte mir ein Handy, mit dem man genau zwei Dinge tun kann: telefonieren und SMS schreiben.

Ich scheine nicht der Einzige zu sein, dem es so geht. Sonst würde Nokia wohl kaum seinen Klassiker 3310 neu auflegen. Ich habe mir allerdings ein anderes Modell besorgt, das ebenfalls nicht mehr kann, aber, wie ich finde, hübscher aussieht – das war mir dann schon wichtig. Das MP01 von Punkt erinnert mich ein bisschen an den klassischen Braun-Taschenrechner, den ich hier neulich vorgestellt habe, deshalb gefällt es mir so gut. Eine Woche lang habe ich mein Smartphone gegen das MP01 eingetauscht. Die ersten drei Tage Entzug waren nicht leicht, aber danach hat mir nichts, absolut gar nichts gefehlt. Ich habe viel weniger telefoniert als sonst, weil ich nicht dauernd an dem Gerät rumgedaddelt habe und auf die Art gar nicht erst auf die Idee kam, dauernd Leute anzurufen. Stattdessen hatte ich plötzlich wieder viel öfter das im Blick, was um mich herum passiert. Einmal bin ich mit dem Zug aus München rausgefahren und habe einfach nur aus dem Fenster geschaut. Da habe ich bei der Fahrt aus der Stadt raus gemerkt, wie viele neue Gebäude am Rand der Schienen mittlerweile entstanden sind ... Ich hatte einfach jahrelang nicht hingeschaut. Und noch ein Vorteil: Ich habe das Handy genau einmal aufgeladen, nämlich am Anfang.
