The Punkt. DP01 Landine, 2011–2024

A landline for the modern age

The vision behind the DP01 Phone

In the late 2000's, Punkt. founder, Petter Neby was becoming increasingly frustrated by the way technology was shaping daily life. Phones were becoming cluttered, noisy, and more invasive. The rise of the smartphone was accelerating, but at the same time, everyday household objects like cordless phones had become soulless, badly made, and aesthetically neglected.

Petter had spent years in the consumer electronics industry and saw a clear opportunity: to create well-designed, high-quality alternatives to generic tech. Devices that people would want to keep, and that would support more mindful living.

He founded Punkt. with a clear goal: to design essential tools for everyday life, guided by simplicity, clarity, and timeless design.

To bring the DP01 to life, Petter turned to Jasper Morrison, one of the world’s most respected industrial designers. The goal was to reimagine the cordless phone, not with more features, but with better ones.

A landline phone that worked beautifully, looked beautiful, and helped people communicate with intention.

Design and Functionality: Simplicity Speaks Clearly

Although originally intended to follow the AC01 alarm clock as Punkt.’s second product, the DP01 was actually the first Punkt. device to reach the public. It launched in 2011, just as smartphones were becoming dominant, making its very existence seeming a surprise to some.

But that was exactly the point.

The DP01 challenged the throwaway tech culture of the time by offering a strikingly modern landline phone, built with care and crafted to last. Unlike conventional cordless phones that stood upright and hid their interfaces, the DP01’s unique face-up design made everything accessible at a glance.

The handset sat in a minimalist cradle that doubled as a dock and display. Clear fonts, tactile buttons, and a backlit screen made it easy to use, even in low light. It was designed to sit naturally on a shelf, desk, or be mounted on the wall. And it simply looked better than anything else on the market.

It was also functional where it mattered:

  • Reliable digital DECT-GAP call quality
  • Built-in answering machine
  • Contact storage for up to 100 entries
  • Expandable to six handsets
  • Original ringtones composed by the musician Scanner

The DP01 wasn't trying to compete with smartphones.

It was offering an alternative to them.

Craftsmanship: Thoughtful Design, Lasting Impact

From the beginning, the DP01 was about intentionality, offering a tool that encouraged better habits and more focused conversations. Reviews in the design press were enthusiastic, and it soon earned a place in multiple museum collections, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

For many, the DP01 became more than just a phone. It became a symbol of balance in the digital age, used in homes, studios, and offices that valued design as much as function.

Over its 13-year lifespan, the DP01 remained essentially unchanged, a testament to the clarity of its original vision. Available in Black, White, and Red, it fit quietly and confidently into many different interiors. It continued to be featured in exhibitions, galleries, and editorials around the world.

In 2024, the DP01 was retired. Punkt. had grown and evolved, but the DP01 remained a cornerstone of its philosophy: that less, when designed well, can truly be more.

Its legacy lives on in the products that followed, including the Punkt. MP series of mobile phones, and the AC series of alarm clocks. But the DP01 will always be the product that started it all:

A phone that helped people reconnect with what really matters.
