Why Privacy Is Important

Privacy is easy to overlook, until it disappears.
It is the freedom to think without being measured, to speak without being recorded, and to move without being tracked. Most people don’t actively think about privacy in daily life, but they immediately feel its absence: when a private conversation turns into an ad, when a personal search becomes a suggestion, when a choice no longer feels entirely their own.

In the digital world, almost every interaction leaves a digital footprint, often without users fully realizing it. Over time, this online surveillance and quiet monitoring reshapes behavior.

Privacy creates space for independence. It allows individuals to explore ideas, maintain relationships, and make decisions without external pressure. When privacy weakens, trust erodes: not only between people and technology, but across society as a whole.

As digital tools become embedded in everyday life, privacy is no longer a personal preference. It is a prerequisite for autonomy.

Limiting Power and Preventing Abuse

Data privacy acts as a safeguard against excessive control by corporations and governments. When personal information is unrestricted, it can be used to influence opinions, manipulate choices, or exploit vulnerabilities. The Cambridge Analytica scandal exposed how personal data can be weaponised at scale, often without meaningful consent.

Beyond political misuse, weak data protection leads to very real personal risks. Identity theft, financial fraud, harassment, and stalking are all fueled by leaked or misused information. These are not rare exceptions.

According to cybersecurity data breach reports published by the HIPAA Journal, more than 23 million individuals were affected by data breaches in Q3 2025 alone, bringing the total for the year to nearly 202 million people. Data exposure is no longer hypothetical, it is routine.

Businesses are affected as well. Strong data privacy practices help build customer trust and demonstrate compliance with regulations such as GDPR and CCPA. Failure to protect user data can result in legal penalties, financial loss, and long-term reputational damage.

What is Personal Data, and Why Data Privacy is so Valuable?

At its simplest, data is information: facts, numbers, words, measurements, and observations. In practice, it is far more revealing.

Opening a navigation app, sending a message, scrolling through a feed, or stopping on a video all generate signals. Location data, timestamps, device identifiers, contact networks, and usage patterns are constantly recorded. Some of this information is shared deliberately. Much of it is inferred automatically.

Individually, these data points seem insignificant. Combined, they reveal habits, routines, relationships, preferences, and emotional states. Over time, they form a detailed portrait of daily life.

Technology platforms rely on this continuous stream. Data is collected across multiple services, merged, and analysed to predict behavior and shape attention. Advertising is only one outcome. Data also determines what content people see, what offers they receive, and how they are evaluated.

For example, a fitness app that collects biometric data such as heart rate, weight, or general health indicators can pass that information to third parties, including insurance providers. Those companies can then use the data to adjust prices, limit coverage, or exclude individuals based on inferred health risks. What begins as a personal wellness tool can quietly turn into a system that penalises or manipulates people for the data their own devices generate.

The most revealing layer is often metadata, commonly reported to be collected by many popular apps such as WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok. Patterns of interaction, who communicates with whom, when, and how often, can expose social structures and habits without accessing message content.

Once collected, data rarely stays in one place. It is stored, duplicated, shared, and reused. Even deleted accounts often leave traces behind, as consent is often irrevocable, once given. This creates an imbalance: individuals generate the data, while decisions about its use are made elsewhere.

How is Personal Data Stored and Monetised?

When using applications on a mobile device, app permissions are requests that allow applications to access specific functions or data on a device. Common permissions include:

  • Camera

  • Microphone

  • Location

  • Contacts

  • Messages (SMS)

  • Files and storage

  • Phone functions

Each permission opens a pathway to personal information. In theory, access is limited to what the app needs to function. It is generally assumed that apps will only store information that is strictly necessary for the application to function, and that it won’t be sold without permission.

The reality is far more concerning. Each app permission carries potential privacy risks, yet popular applications continue to push the limits. From secretly collecting audio data to tracking users across multiple platforms, these practices have generated a long history of documented abuses - and resulted in multimillion-dollar fines for major tech companies.

Is this enough to stop them? Not even close.

While data protection regulators have issued billions in GDPR fines to major tech companies, the reality is far less intimidating for those firms. 

Legal appeals, lengthy court procedures, and delayed payments mean that many fines take years to be enforced, and a significant portion is often reduced or overturned. For example, only 0.6% of the $3.26 billion in fines issued by the Irish Data Protection Commission between 2020 and 2024 had actually been paid by December 2024. 

Additionally, compared to the enormous revenues of tech giants, these penalties are often little more than a cost of doing business, offering minimal deterrent against invasive privacy practices.

Why App Permissions Matter For Data Privacy

Granting permissions requires trust. Users assume that apps will use data responsibly, store it securely, and avoid sharing it without consent. In practice, excessive permissions increase the risk of data leaks, surveillance, and misuse.

Modern operating systems offer partial solutions, such as limiting access to “only while using the app.” These controls help, but they do not address how data is interpreted, combined, or reused once collected.

Some systems take a more transparent approach. For example, the Punkt. MC03 introduces a Data Ledger, that makes permissions visible and adjustable on a simple scale. Instead of hidden menus and blanket approvals, users can clearly regulate how much access each app receives.

Are Data Privacy Regulations like the GDPR Effective at Protecting Data?

Data privacy regulations such as the GDPR are widely seen as strong on paper, but their real-world effectiveness is far less certain. As Buckley, Caulfield, and Becker explain, “the success of any regulation, however good, ultimately depends on how well it is executed.”
Their research shows that while the GDPR establishes ambitious goals, enforcement is uneven and difficult to evaluate across countries and regulators.

The authors find that perceptions of GDPR effectiveness are often “subjective, sanctions-focused, and influenced by one’s roles and responsibilities,” meaning success is frequently measured by fines rather than by actual improvements in data protection. They also highlight a structural problem: the independence of regulators, designed to protect them from political pressure, “raises serious questions of accountability.”

In practice, this means that although the GDPR provides an important legal framework, it does not guarantee consistent or effective protection of personal data. Enforcement varies widely, outcomes take years to emerge, and meaningful accountability remains difficult to measure. The regulation sets boundaries, but how well those boundaries protect individuals depends largely on how regulators interpret, prioritise, and apply the rules.

Consent, Complexity, and the Illusion of Choice

Privacy controls often suggest empowerment: Toggles, sliders, and checkboxes that promise control. But meaningful consent usually sits elsewhere, in the terms and conditions.

Many tracking practices are authorised through legal language that overrides user settings and user privacy. Even when location sharing is disabled, the digital identity (location) can be inferred through IP addresses, Wi-Fi networks, or nearby devices. Turning off a switch may reduce surface tracking, but it rarely stops deeper data collection.

Major tech scandals are rarely surprises. In most cases, the behavior was disclosed in updated terms long before it became public. The issue is that almost no one reads them. According to the Pew Research Center, just 9% of American adults say they always read a company’s privacy policy before agreeing to the terms and conditions, with 36% of respondents that claim they never read the terms and conditions policies.

Terms of service have expanded dramatically over the past decade. What once fit on a few pages now spans dozens. Rights claimed by platforms have grown, while user protections have narrowed. Complexity has become a strategy: the harder documents are to read, the easier it is to secure agreement.

The result is not informed consent, but forced acceptance. Participating in digital life often means agreeing to conditions that are practically impossible to understand in full.

Awareness helps, but awareness alone does not create alternatives.

What Can Be Done: Practical Alternatives and Better Choices To Protect Your Digital Privacy 

Improving data privacy does not require abandoning technology. It requires intentional use.

Usage of Privacy-First services Privacy-first services reduce data collection by design. End-to-end encrypted communication tools ensure that only participants can access content. Providers like Apostrophy and Proton build systems where even the service itself cannot read user data.

Review app permissions: Daily habits matter just as much. Reviewing app permissions, limiting location access, switching to safer and more secure app alternatives, and avoiding unnecessary account connections reduce exposure over time. Small decisions can have a significant impact in the long run.

Update software and Multi-Factor Authentication: Basic security supports privacy in concrete ways. Updated software, encrypted devices, strong passwords, and multi-factor authentication protect data from common vulnerabilities.

Cloud services deserve regular attention. Convenience often leads to excess. Periodically reviewing backups and synced data helps align storage with actual needs.

Simplification helps too: Fewer apps, fewer services, and fewer notifications reduce observation points. Privacy improves when digital environments become quieter.

Living with Technology on Deliberate Terms

Privacy is not a one-time decision. It develops through awareness, repetition, and adjustment.

For years, privacy has been dismissed with the idea that people who have “nothing to hide” have nothing to fear. This logic misses the point. Privacy is not about secrecy or wrongdoing: it is about context, dignity, and control, because boundaries matter.

Technology evolves, and personal circumstances change. Revisiting tools and settings is not mistrust; it is care. What felt acceptable years ago may no longer make sense today. Over time, these small acts of attention restore balance.

Behind every data point is a real person, living a real life. Treating personal data with restraint begins by recognising that connection.

Privacy allows people to remain present without being exposed. That space is worth protecting.
